Women's Pathology Fellowship

The fellowship for academic year 2020-2021 has been filled.

Director: Farbod Darvishian, M.D., Associate Professor of Pathology

Description: One fellowship position. This one-year fellowship provides an intensive experience in gynecologic-obstetric and breast surgical pathology, along with ample opportunities in clinico-pathologic research. The fellowship is based at the Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals which together accessions over 12,000 Ob-Gyn and 8000 breast cases per year. Cases are derived from NYU Cancer Institute, Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital and its affiliated HHC hospitals such as the Gouverneur Hospital, and Lutheran Hospital. The nature and variety of the case material is outstanding and varied and includes complex oncologic specimens requiring in depth clinic-pathologic correlations. Fellows are involved in the review and sign out of cases, the performance and interpretation of frozen sections, presentation at conferences, research and the teaching and supervision of residents and medical students. Fellow will guide the residents on grossing and microscopic analysis of difficult cases. Research opportunities are ample; fellows are expected to participate in clinic-pathologic research projects under faculty supervision.

Fellows Workload and Responsibilities

  • 9,000 breast specimens
  • 9,000 gynecology specimens
  • Preview cases - Help rotating residents - One month of grossing
  • Three tumor boards
    • Gynecology tumor board: Every Friday
    • Breast multidisciplinary conference: Every Wednesday (summer recess)
    • Lutheran breast tumor board: Once a month

Requirements: Completion of a three-year program in Anatomic Pathology or a four-year program in AP/CP and must hold a NY State License prior to the start date. MUST hold a NY State License/Limited Permit prior to the start date. Please inquire with the Program Manager.

Visas: NYU only offers J-1 visas through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to candidates in need of visa sponsorship.

Stipends: Commensurate with Candidate’s level of training.
