Communication Compass: AI Enhanced Feedback System
Principal Investigator: Yuliya N. Yoncheva, PhD
Co-Principal Investigator: Jesse Burk-Rafel, MD, MRes
With funding from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation's competitive Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Education grants program, the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education has launched Communication Compass, a 2-year initiative developing AI-powered feedback systems for resident communication skills.
The system will combine transformer-based speech recognition and large language models to assess patient education and counseling skills, providing structured feedback with examples from residents' own encounters. Co-designed with residents and faculty, this feedback system will be tested through a randomized trial with validity evidence collected to ensure educational alignment, effectiveness, and transparency.
As one of three nationally selected projects, Communication Compass establishes an ethical, scalable framework for responsible AI integration in medical education that addresses bias, transparency, and learner autonomy.
