Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship
NYU Langone Health’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine offers three positions for the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship, which begins on July 1 of each new academic year.
The fellowship consists of two programs—the Comprehensive Program and the Pancreatobiliary Focus Program. There are two positions for our Comprehensive Program and one position for our Pancreatobiliary Focus Program.
Candidates for these one-year positions must have completed a three-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited gastroenterology fellowship program. The Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship is not ACGME accredited.
As part of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at NYU Langone, fellows receive specialized training in a variety of interventional endoscopic procedures, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP); endoscopic ultrasound (EUS); luminal stenting techniques; advanced resection techniques, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and full-thickness resection (FTR); peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) procedures; endoscopic closure techniques including, suturing, bariatric procedures; endoscopic anti-reflux procedures; and deep enteroscopy.
Comprehensive Program
Fellows in the Comprehensive Program have training across all advanced procedures, including ESD, POEM, and bariatric procedures. Fellows in this program spend nine months training at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavillion in Manhattan and two months training at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Graduates of the Comprehensive Program, which began in 2017, have been very successful.
Pancreatobiliary Focus Program
Fellows in the Pancreatobiliary Focus Program are focused more intently on procedures for pancreatobiliary disease, particularly ERCP and EUS. They have exposure to ESD, POEM, and bariatric procedures, but receive less-extensive training in them. Fellows in the Pancreatobiliary Focus Program spend six months training at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion in Manhattan and five months training at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. The Pancreatobiliary Focus Program commenced in 2023–24. The program has received excellent feedback, and fellows have obtained excellent procedural volumes for ERCP and EUS.
Procedure Volumes
| Procedure | Annual Volume at NYU Langone |
|---|---|
| ERCP | >900 |
| EUS | >1,200 |
| Small bowel enteroscopy | 200 |
| Bariatric endoscopy | 40 |
| Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with radiofrequency ablation | 20 |
| Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) | 120 |
| Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) | 140 |
| Cricopharyngeal myotomy | 20 |
Fellows also hone their skills in patient triage and clinical decision making, including indications and alternatives for procedures, procedure preparation and follow-up, and communication with consulting physicians, patients and families, and nursing colleagues. Additionally, fellows participate in endoscopic research and present interesting cases and videos at institutional, regional, and national conferences.
