Neurosurgery Fellowships Neurological Surgery–Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship

Neurological Surgery–Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a one or two-year, Committee on Advanced Subspecialty Training (CAST)–accredited fellowship in Neurological Surgery – Interventional Neuroradiology, administered by the Department of Neurosurgery. This fellowship, in continuous existence for over 40 years, is one of the oldest and most prestigious neurointerventional training sites in the World.

Our commitment to education is reflected in our many Worldwide educational initiatives, exemplified by our BANANA in-person and BANANAZ virtual meetings.

As an interventional neuroradiology fellow, physicians who are board-eligible or board-certified in radiology, neurology, and/or neurosurgery receive specialized training in the performance and interpretation of neuroangiographic and neurointerventional procedures for adults and children.

The fellowship is overseen by program director Maksim Shapiro, MD (Maksim.Shapiro@NYULangone.org). For more information, contact program coordinators Allison George Lucas (Allison.George.Lucas@NYULangone.org) or Ivonne Monterrey (Ivonne.Monterrey@NYULangone.org)

Training Experience

Fellows develop expertise in the ever-expanding array of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and procedures, including ischemic stroke, cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, various fistulas, tumors of the head and neck, venous / CSF disorders – spinal CSF fistula, venous pulsatile tinnitus, and many others. Emphasis is placed on thorough understanding of angiographic technique, including Cone Beam CT, normal and pathologic anatomy. A full range of multidisciplinary and research opportunities are available, reflective of the overall depth and breadth of expertise within the overall NYU Langone Health system.

First Year

During your first fellowship year, fellows gain experience in clinical neurology and neurologic examination, advanced image interpretation, and related neurosurgical techniques and procedures for the comprehensive diagnosis and management of neurovascular conditions. Training takes place at multiple centers, including NYU Langone Health Manhattan Campus, NYU Brooklyn Campus, and Bellevue H+H Hospitals.

Fellows perform and interpret diagnostic neuroangiographic procedures and assist with neurointerventional procedures with guidance and supervision from our world-class faculty. Fellows are active in the daily work of our clinical service, take part in teaching rounds for medical students and fellows, and participate in weekly multidisciplinary cerebrovascular conferences.

Second Year

In the second fellowship year, fellows take on additional responsibilities in the performance of diagnostic and interventional neuroangiographic procedures and in the management of patients with neurovascular conditions in inpatient settings.

At the completion of the program, fellows are expected to exceed the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery (SNIS) membership criteria and are eligible for membership in the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery, Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology, American Society of Neuroradiology, World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, and others.

Research Opportunities

Our fellows are encouraged to participate in Department of Neurosurgery, Radiology, Neurology and related entities research, present interventional neuroradiology research at scientific meetings, and publish in leading journals.

Our division has been a worldwide leader in the development of novel endovascular treatments for cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous shunts, advanced imaging, and many other areas. We offer many opportunities for fellows to become involved in our efforts.
