The CATCH (Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals) Addiction Consult Service at Bellevue Hospital

Description

This is a 2-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of Addiction Psychiatry. Students will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the field of addiction psychiatry through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. During the 2-week elective, students will gain increased knowledge of substance use disorders, management of intoxication/withdrawal, treatment and community resources. Consults are in the inpatient medical/surgical setting and may also be in the emergency room. This rotation is based in Bellevue Hospital. Students will also join the PGY-2 didactics on Thursdays in Manhattan, Psychiatry Grand Rounds and Bellevue Case Conference on Fridays. Elective objectives are outlined below.

Objectives of the Elective

By the end of this elective, through daily contact with patients and didactics, you will:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of the field of addiction psychiatry, building on your pre-clerkship and if applicable your clerkship experiences
  2. Expand your skills in evaluation and management of patients with substance use disorders that you may encounter throughout your career, regardless of specialty
  3. Learn about specialty-specific history and mental status exams
  4. Gain knowledge regarding treatment modalities used to treat substance use disorders in the inpatient setting
  5. Gain insight into the interdisciplinary nature of this specialty and how our clinicians interact with other medical disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care
  6. Explore the option of psychiatry as a career choice

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

By enrolling in this elective, you have agreed to:

  1. Participate in at least 35 contact hours of education each week
  2. Provide communication of any excused absences to the Office of Student Affairs (excused absence form) and to the elective coordinator, in a timely fashion
  3. Arrive in a timely fashion to all locations to which you are assigned
  4. Participate in patient care with residents and attendings
  5. Be an active participant in the care of patients being followed by the team, as dictated by the resident/attending
  6. Attend all didactics provided for trainees

Method of evaluation

Students will be evaluated by faculty, residents and Dr. Chung.

To receive a Pass for the 2-week elective rotation a student must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Take a patient history
  • Perform mental status examinations
  • Document mental status examinations
  • Work professionally with all team members and with patients & families
  • Present on a weekly topic/article related to substance use/addiction

Duration: 2 Weeks

Months/Blocks Offered: 2 weeks in March, 2 weeks in June
