Description

This is a 4-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of reproductive psychiatry. Students will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. The goals of this elective are:

  1. To provide an in-depth, interdisciplinary, evidence-based introduction to the psychiatric evaluation and treatment of pregnant and postpartum women 
  2. To develop essential clinical skills needed to: 
    • Identify psychopathology in pregnant and postpartum women
    • Develop clinical case formulation in complex patient presentations
    • Think critically about treatment planning: individual psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, group, and/or dyadic treatments

Objectives of the Elective

By the end of this elective, through daily contact with patients and didactics, you will:

  1. Provide an interdisciplinary, evidence-based introduction to caring for women with psychiatric disorders associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period
  2. Develop clinical skills needed to gather a thorough and focused psychiatric history 
  3. Demonstrate use of the biopsychosocial model to formulate an assessment of the patient
  4. Assess patient safety and identify indications for hospitalization and/or ACS involvement when needed
  5. Work professionally and effectively in a multidisciplinary team 
  6. Develop skills in treating psychiatric disorders associated with the perinatal period 
  7. Develop and understand the psychiatric differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatments for the following disorders presenting perinatally: 
    • Mood disorders 
    • Anxiety disorders 
    • Psychotic disorders 
    • Substance use disorders
    • Experience the role of collaborative care clinics in treatment of complex patients
    • Explore the larger themes around fertility, motherhood, and family in society

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

By enrolling in this elective, you have agreed to:

  1. Participate in at least 35 contact hours of education each week
  2. Provide communication of any excused absences to the Office of Student Affairs (excused absence form) and to the elective coordinator, in a timely fashion 
  3. Arrive in a timely fashion to all locations to which you are assigned  
  4. Participate in daily morning rounds and patient care with residents and attendings
  5. Be an active participant in the care of patients being followed by the team, as dictated by the resident/attending
  6. Attend all didactics provided for trainees, as outlined below

Method of evaluation

  • Interdisciplinary team assessments will be made based on clinical encounters, teamwork, written psychiatric notes, and oral presentations of cases 
  • Journal club presentations and participation 
  • Final scholarly presentation on topic of student’s choice in consultation with supervisor, assessing medical student’s preparation and presentation
