Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship

The Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship, offered by NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine, trains graduates of emergency medicine residency programs to become leaders in medical simulation.

Fellows in this one- or two-year postgraduate program gain skills as educators, scholars, and patient safety advocates. They design simulation-based courses for graduate, undergraduate, and professional medical education programs, and participate in rigorous debriefing training and coaching sessions. They also develop a strong education portfolio and foundational skills in safety and quality improvement.

Working with division faculty, fellows use in situ simulation as a tool for health systems testing in collaboration with our operations and patient safety leadership. This allows fellows to gain skills in applied human factors and systems design. We also encourage our fellows to participate in simulation program development that furthers patient safety initiatives and interdepartmental collaboration.

Fellowship Clinical Training

Fellows practice as independent clinicians in our emergency departments and perform fellowship activities at New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences, our state-of-the-art, 25,000-square-foot simulation facility. Simulation tools available for teaching and research at the facility include high-fidelity simulators, task trainers, and hybrid models, and fellows have access to a diverse pool of standardized patients.

Fellows are expected to work an average of 16 clinical hours per week divided between NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. Clinical shifts enable fellows to maintain their clinical skills and provide real-life situations that can inspire the development of simulated case scenarios. Fellows receive competitive compensation for clinical duties.

Our interdisciplinary simulation curriculum focuses on team training and patient safety with colleagues in trauma, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and nursing. For example, fellows assist with in situ simulations for residents and nurses in our adult and pediatric emergency departments.

Fellowship Didactic Training

Fellows have the opportunity to participate in the creation and development of educational materials for weekly meetings with both medical students and residents. Fellows meet with faculty to integrate the emergency medicine core curriculum and specific goal setting into case design for each trainee level.

We emphasize debriefing, an invaluable tool for successful self-reflective learning through which fellows have ample opportunities to develop the technical skills they need to build and troubleshoot simulated scenarios.

Fellows participate in a monthly journal club at which faculty and residents interested in simulation discuss articles from recent literature. During these meetings, participants evaluate research methodology, statistical analysis, and the applicability of research to further study design.

A unique feature of our program is a junior faculty and fellow development curriculum, which lets Department of Emergency Medicine junior faculty and fellows meet monthly to discuss research methodology, teaching strategies, career development, and other topics to foster and enrich the fellows’ academic careers.

Research Opportunities for Fellows

We expect fellows to complete one scholarly project during their training. We provide ample opportunities to participate in independent and ongoing research.

Educational and Teaching Opportunities for Fellows

Interested candidates may elect to pursue the Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE) joint degree from Maastricht University and NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Fellows also have access to advanced courses in debriefing and scenario design held at the Simulation Center.

Length of Fellowship Training

Appointments are for one or two years and start on July 1. We accept one or two fellows per year.

Fellows receive a competitive salary and benefits package and have academic appointments at NYU Grossman School of Medicine for the duration of their training.

How to Apply

Applicants must have completed or expect to complete an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited emergency medicine residency and meet all NYU Grossman School of Medicine credentialing and academic appointment requirements.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of intent that includes their research interests; a current CV; and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the director of their emergency medicine program, to emsimfellows@nyulangone.org by September 15 of the year before the start of the fellowship.
