A 2-year Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE) offered by the internationally renowned
School of Health Professions Education at Maastricht University (the Netherlands)
in partnership with the Department of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine

Funded by a generous grant from the Lucius N. Littauer Foundation

Program Overview

The Master of Health Professions Education Program (MHPE) at NYU is designed to expand the capacity of physicians and other health professionals to lead excellent educational programs and conduct high impact, rigorous educational research. The Program is delivered predominantly via flexible distance learning technologies and requires attendance at a 3 week intensive per year at NYU and at bimonthly seminars designed to support participants in completing a scholarly project.

Program Eligibility

Health professionals seeking careers in educational leadership (e.g. clerkship, program directors, deans) are eligible to enroll in the MHPE, receive mentoring, and use this to structure a productive medical education or medical education research agenda which prepares them to pursue their careers and advance institutional goals.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal statement explaining why you want to participate in the MHPE program (1,000 word limit)
  • Letter of Recommendation from your department chair stating their support for your career trajectory and time needed to complete the program

Selection Process

Applicants selected for participation in the MHPE program will have their materials forwarded to Maastricht University for review by the Maastricht University Admissions Board. If accepted, additional application materials will be required by Maastricht University.

Final decision regarding acceptance into the MHPE program is decided by the Board of Admissions, Maastricht University.

Program Expectations

  • Fulfill all requirements for a Maastricht University Master of Health Professions Degree
    (https://she.mumc.maastrichtuniversity.nl/master-health-professions-education)
  • Obtain support from the Department Chair agreeing to release time: a minimum of 20% FTE (e.g., ½ per week scheduled activities and ½ day research activities) and a 3 week intensive block each year for 2 years
  • Have a fully developed and approved thesis outline by end of year 1
  • Submit at least one medical education research manuscript for publication and a grant application by end of year 2

  • Selection of Applicants by NYUSOM: Jan 6, 2020
  • Applicants Acceptance by MU: Spring 2020
  • MHPE Start Date at NYUSOM: July 2020

Tuition & Fees

Tuition for the entire two-year program is €15,400* to be paid in two installments of €7,700* directly to Maastricht University (fee is subject to change). There is also a $10,000 site fee paid at the beginning of each year of the two-year program. The total cost is approximately ~$37,000 to complete the degree.

* Please note that tuition amount is in Euros. USD equivalent will vary as per changes in exchange rate.
