Department of Neuroscience Community

NYU Langone’s Department of Neuroscience faculty strive for an inclusive environment that enriches our community and leads to a culture of excellence for all. Our belief that everyone belongs enables us to collaborate and produce world-class science that can be seen in our publications and is presented at our events. Through our outreach programs we connect to the people of New York City and beyond.
To maintain our commitment to inclusivity, we insist upon a respectful and supportive community. Our mission is fueled by the following value statements, developed jointly by all members of the Department of Neuroscience:
- Everyone’s voice is important.
- We create a positive work environment and ensure people are not talked over or dismissed.
- We strive to be self-aware and reflect on moments when we fail to live up to these ideals.
- We do not tolerate harassment or intimidation. Where appropriate, we report incidents to department leadership and NYU Langone’s Human Resources Department.
Our Community-Building Partners
The NYU Neuroscience Predoctoral Interest League was founded in 2020 by a group of neuroscience graduate students seeking to foster community, lend a collective voice to graduate students, promote accountability from the program, and strive to ensure that graduate training in neuroscience offers an inclusive and accessible environment that is open to all. We partner with leaders in NYU Langone’s Office of Professional Development and the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences to provide guidance and training for members of our community.
The Department of Neuroscience has a vibrant postdoc community, with several seminars, workshops, and initiatives created exclusively for the professional development of our postdoctoral fellows. We also partner with the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Postdoctoral Affairs program.
NYU Langone's Ombuds Program is a neutral, confidential, and informal resource to help faculty, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students address and resolve workplace conflicts.
We host the Seminars by Postdocs in Neuroscience: Extramural Series (SPiNES), which brings established postdoctoral researchers from outside of NYU to our community for a day to present their work in an hour-long seminar, to meet one-on-one with faculty, and to engage our community in informal discussions. By doing so, we build bridges with external neuroscience networks.
CoNNEXiNS (Colloquium at NYU for Networking: Extramural for Invited Neuroscience Students) is a symposium giving advanced graduate students the opportunity to give formal seminars to the NYU neuroscience community. It is an opportunity for external students to connect with our community and identify potential labs for their post-doctoral research.
Our vibrant community comes together for regular scientific events and supports educational programs at all levels. Our active outreach program, the Neuroscience Outreach Group at NYU, partners with local schools and community organizations to host educational events that celebrate the brain and explain how neuroscience can unlock its many mysteries.
