Ophthalmology Fellowships Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Fellowship

Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Department of Ophthalmology now offers a new one-year Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Fellowship under the leadership of Dr. Cesar Michael A. Samson, a recognized authority on uveitis in the New York/Tri-State area for over the past 25 years. He is joined by Dr. Gabrielle Fridman, as well as the excellent ophthalmology team at NYU Langone Eye Center.

Our Ocular Immunology & Uveitis Fellowship provides the opportunities of education, clinical training, and research for the care of patients with ocular inflammatory disorders. The mission of the program is to train ophthalmologists to be experts in the diagnosis and management of complicated ocular inflammation cases, and thus play a critical role in the lives of patients and of ophthalmology communities/groups/practices caring for such patients.

Fellows can expect to encounter in excess of 100 clinical encounters with uveitis patients weekly. Fellows will learn a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, including history, review of systems, ocular examination, non-ocular examination, ocular imaging, and blood and diagnostic testing. Fellows will also learn a comprehensive approach to management, including eyedrops, regional or intraocular injections, oral steroids, and systemic immunosuppressive prescribing and monitoring.

Fellows will also participate in surgeries of patients with ocular inflammation, including uveitic cataract, complicated cataract surgeries (e.g. IOL replacement), vitreous biopsy, scleral biopsy, scleral patch grafts, and the perioperative control of inflammation. By the end of the fellowship program, the fellow will feel prepared to handle any complicated ocular inflammatory case.

Our fellowship also provides opportunity for research. The NYU Uveitis Service is conducting uveitis-related research along many different lines, including clinical research, translational research, clinical trials, and drug and medical device innovation. Fellows will participate and assist in medical education, by working closely with ophthalmology residents and medical students. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in local and national conferences and lectures.

Fellows can expect to gain comprehensive experience by rotating among a number of locations, including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center 41st Street; and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.
