Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Department of Ophthalmology now offers a one-year post-residency fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus. While this is a new fellowship for NYU, it is building off the foundation of the fellowship offered by Pediatric Ophthalmic Consultants, New York City’s largest pediatric ophthalmology private practice group, which has been training pediatric ophthalmology fellows since 2005. This enhanced program will now combine the clinical expertise of a group of pediatric ophthalmologists who perform over 1,000 surgeries annually, with the innovation of a world class academic medical center and Department of Ophthalmology.

Understanding that pediatric ophthalmologists are responsible for all ophthalmic concerns in pediatric patients, the program is designed to promote a diverse clinical and surgical experience. The fellowship provides a unique education by combining the diverse sites of an academic practice at NYU Langone, Bellevue Hospital, the flagship hospital in New York City’s public healthcare system, and the offices of Pediatric Ophthalmic Consultants. By working with pediatric ophthalmologists in both an academic and private practice, fellows will learn varied approaches to treating clinical problems, such as pediatric and adult strabismus, pediatric cataracts, and the screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

They will also have dedicated training with other ophthalmic subspecialists. Areas of additional protected clinical and surgical training include, pediatric glaucoma, pediatric oculoplastics, pediatric cornea, and pediatric uveitis. Fellows will graduate being capable of treating any pediatric ophthalmology pathology they wish to incorporate in their career.

Fellows are required to conduct a research project while at NYU Langone and are expected to submit their original work at the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) annual meeting. The department will provide fellows with the support they need to complete projects.

The fellowship faculty are dedicated to creating a tight-knit and personalized program to meet the fellow’s educational needs, so that they can pursue a career in any practice environment and incorporate whichever skills they desire in their clinical practice. As a new program, our fellow will have the ability to take an active role in shaping their education and building an enduring fellowship to train the future of pediatric ophthalmology.

Fellows can expect to gain comprehensive experience by rotating among a number of locations, including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center 41st Street; and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.
