Description

This is a 4-week elective that seeks to build on infectious disease knowledge, and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Infectious Disease Elective. Students will be expected to serve at the level of a sub-intern. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through providing consultations to the adult, medical and surgical, psychiatric and emergency services. Students are responsible for providing recommendations and education to those who request assistance with the management of patients with suspected or proven infectious diseases.

Problems referred to the service include unexplained fevers, failures of common infections to respond to therapy, uncommon or unusually severe infections, treatment of infections due to multi-drug resistant organisms, management of travel-related infections, and evaluation of patients with suspected or proven immune deficiencies. Residents and students are the first to see patients in need of consultations and are expected to analyze the problem and formulate a plan of management for presentation to the fellows and attendings. In addition, after the initial consultation, students will follow patients to assess the evolving course of disease, additional diagnostic information, and responses to therapy, and reassess diagnostic and therapeutic plans as necessary.

By the end of this elective, through daily contact with patients and didactics, you will:
