Description

This is a 2-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of Pulmonary Medicine. Students will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience by taking part in daily pulmonary consultation rounds. Students will, along with senior pulmonary fellows, be able to evaluate and examine patients with a wide spectrum of pulmonary diseases. Students will also be encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary conferences (oncologic, thoracic surgery, chest radiology, and pathology) and observe pulmonary procedures including bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and transthoracic lung biopsy. Students will also rotate through the pulmonary physiology laboratory.

Objectives of the Elective

By the end of this elective, through daily contact with patients and didactics, you will:

1. Gain a deeper understanding of the field of pulmonary medicine, building on your pre-clerkship and clerkship experiences, through a broad exposure to pulmonary diseases
2. Expand your skills in inpatient and outpatient workup and management of patients with pulmonary diseases that you may encounter throughout your career, regardless of specialty
3. Learn about specialty-specific history and physical exams as well as the indications for, and complications of specialty-specific procedures
4. Gain knowledge regarding treatment modalities used to treat pulmonary diseases
5. Gain insight into the interdisciplinary nature of this specialty and how our clinicians interact with other medical disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care
6. Explore the option of pulmonary medicine as medicine subspecialty

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

By enrolling in this elective, you have agreed to:

1. Participate in at least 35 contact hours of education each week
2. Provide communication of any excused absences to the Office of Student Affairs (excused absence form) and to the elective coordinator, in a timely fashion
3. Arrive in a timely fashion to all locations to which you are assigned
4. Participate in daily rounds and patient care with residents and attendings
5. Be an active participant in the care of patients being followed by the team, as dictated by the resident/attending
6. Attend all didactics provided for trainees, as outlined below

Method of evaluation

Students are evaluated by Attendings assigned to work with them who then present their findings to the preceptor who is responsible for final evaluation.

Student point of contact before start of elective: Andrew Lehr, MD

48 hours prior to the start of the rotation, students will receive an email from Kathy Papassoulis with contact information for their supervising pulmonary fellow and attending. At 9AM on the morning of the start of the rotation, students should reach out to the fellow via cell (text or call) in order to coordinate a meeting space to join the pulmonary consult service and receive an orientation to the rotation.

One afternoon every two weeks, students will join for pulmonary clinic at the VA on Monday afternoon. Students will reach out directly to Dr. Andrew Lehr, 718-986-9479 at around 11:00AM to coordinate meeting for pulmonary clinic and VA radiology conference. VA Radiology conference occurs on 11 North conference room. Pulmonary clinic occurs on 12 North.

One afternoon every two weeks, students will also join the fellow in the pulmonary function lab. Contact information for the appropriate fellow will be provided in an email by Kathy Papassoulis. Students should reach out at the beginning of each week to coordinate what afternoon is best to go the pulmonary function test lab and participate in teaching and perform their own pulmonary function test.
