Preceptor: William Walter, MD
Course Code: 15-04
Contact: Evelyn Espinosa,
Telephone: (212) 263-6737

Prerequisites: None

This elective is geared toward students who are planning a career in radiology, orthopedics or rheumatology. Students will receive instruction in the basics of musculoskeletal radiology including the types of procedures used and limitations of these procedures. They will be assigned to musculoskeletal radiologists and will participate in departmental and interdepartmental conferences.

Objectives of the Elective

This course will serve as an introduction to the utility of conventional radiography, CT and MRI for evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders. There will be a review of common fractures and dislocations, computed tomography of the spine for disk disease, metastasis and fractures, MRI of the spine for detection of metastases, MRI of the shoulder, knee, ankle and wrist for assessment of injury of the ligaments and tendons.

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

  1. Attendance at conferences.
  2. Students are required to be present during all radiology film interpretation sessions. These are held 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  3. Each student is asked to review one specific topic and present it briefly to the group, at least once during the elective.

Didactic Program

Dr. Vieira is the faculty preceptor for the elective students. In her absence, the attending radiologists assigned to musculoskeletal radiology at HJD will take over these duties. MRI and radiographs studies are reviewed 9 a.m. to 4 pm Mondays to Fridays with all the residents and students at HJD.

Method of Evaluation

The students will be given a test consisting of viewing a group of 5 radiologic studies on the first day of their elective, and at the conclusion of the elective. The performance of the student on this test, and the feedback of the attendings during the elective, will form the basis for evaluation of the students.
