Department of Medicine Summer Research Program for Medical Students
The Department of Medicine’s six-week Summer Research Program takes place between your first and second years as a student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Our program allows you to build research skills, explore clinical interests, and grow as a professional.
Components of the Summer Research Program
The Summer Research Program allows you to participate in a research project, clinical shadowing, and professional development.
Research Project
The research project is supervised by a faculty mentor. You can browse our list of ongoing summer research projects (Kerberos ID required for login) and research concentrations.
During your research project, you will:
- meet one-on-one with a librarian to help with literature review
- meet with a faculty expert in scientific poster design to help present research most effectively
- present your work at the end of summer poster exhibition, which is a terrific opportunity to build your CV, practice your skills in poster presentation, and meet faculty and trainees from across the NYU Grossman School of Medicine network including division directors

Clinical Shadowing
You also can explore exciting clinical shadowing experiences, tailored to your interests with faculty members selected for their excellent teaching skills.
Professional Development
Participate in professional development during our dedicated weekly seminar series, with scheduled activities such as:
- a mentorship talk by a senior faculty member who has served as president of a national subspecialty society
- a simulation session in echocardiography
- a simulation session in rapid response and critical care
- networking sessions with residents and fellows in multiple medicine subspecialties
Those who wish to continue their project or engage in new research after the summer may consider pursuing a scholarly concentration as part of their MD degree or participating in the Honors Program.
