Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at NYU Langone Health includes pediatric pulmonologists, specially trained nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and respiratory therapists who work together to treat children with pulmonary conditions, such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic cough, congenital airway abnormalities, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, and chronic lung disease.

The pediatric pulmonary medicine team provides multidisciplinary care for children with complex diseases of the airway and gastrointestinal tract at the Pediatric Aerodigestive Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Pulmonary physicians and investigators in the division have extensive experience in clinical care and research, and the educators teach trainees essential diagnostic skills and procedures.

Clinical research performed by the division’s investigators leads to advances in pediatric pulmonary care. Current research in the division aims to find individual treatment approaches to severe uncontrolled asthma in children. Researchers also collaborate with other divisions and foundations to improve the quality of life for children with cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. The division has also been studying the utility of nasal nitric oxide measurement in primary ciliary dyskinesia, cystic fibrosis, and other pulmonary diseases.

The division’s faculty train medical students in clinical research and teach residents and fellows to perform diagnostic tests for pulmonary conditions. Trainees in general pediatrics and critical care learn skills that are essential for treating pediatric pulmonology patients in outpatient and hospital settings.

As part of the division’s efforts to advance the understanding of pediatric pulmonology, members participate in lectures and seminars at national and international medical society meetings. These include meetings of the American Thoracic Society; the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference, held annually by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; meetings of the Aerodigestive Society; and others.
