NYU Langone’s Division of Clinical Genetics offers electives for residents and medical students. Faulty teach trainees about typical presentations of genetic disease and associated differential diagnoses. They learn about common genetic etiologies of disease and how to ascertain an accurate and relevant family history.

Trainees attend outpatient clinics, observe inpatient consultations, make presentations on disorders or present cases in written or oral form, and participate in discussions of selected readings about genetics or disorders with genetic etiology. Weekly case conferences with genetic counselors from departments throughout NYU Langone provide trainees with exposure to genetic factors in maternal–fetal medicine, neurology, and oncology.

Medical students participate in clinical genetics lectures and seminars in genetic counseling. Students who have completed the core pediatrics clerkship can enroll in a four-week medical genetics elective, during which they learn genetics-related clinical care concepts while caring for outpatients and inpatients at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Students from other medical schools may participate in genetic counseling lectures and seminars.

Residents in the Department of Pediatrics can attend eight lectures each year on the following topics: clinical genetics and common syndromes, chromosome microdeletions and microduplications, metabolic disease with dysmorphic features, genetic etiology of deafness, overgrowth syndromes, genetic syndromes presenting with regression, genetic counseling, and newborn screening.
