Description
This elective will better acquaint the student with the basic concepts of medical genetics and their application to the evaluation and treatment of human disease. Students will see patients in the prenatal and non-prenatal (pediatric and adult) genetics in our office, outpatient clinics and in the wards at Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals. Students will also participate in the conferences of the Clinical Genetic Services.
Objectives of Elective
The medical student will 1) improve his/her skills for taking directed histories, including family histories, 2) improve his/her skills in general physical examination, 3) review basic principles of genetic transmission and molecular basis of disease 4) review the use of genetic markers for determining risk of disease, 5) improve his/her skills for counseling patients and families about risk of disease.
Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective
The medical student will participate in inpatient and outpatient consultation sessions, genetic counseling sessions, and outpatient visits for management of patients with genetic disease. A schedule will be created to suit the student’s needs. Below is a partial list of Division activities.

Didactic Program
The student will participate in weekly case management and clinical didactic conferences. In addition, he or she will solve a series of medical genetics problems and will assist in the organization of at least one clinical genetics conference.
Method of Evaluation
Through interactive teaching, the student will be evaluated for his or her ability to apply the concepts of clinical genetics. The student’s ability to solve written problems and the quality of his or her presentation at a conference will be evaluated.
