Pediatric Cardiology Research
Researchers in NYU Langone’s Division of Pediatric Cardiology are pioneers in three-dimensional advanced cardiac imaging and printing for cardiac congenital heart disease. Along with investigators in the Congenital Heart Program, the division works with this advanced technology for precise assessment of preintervention anatomy and surgery simulation. The dedicated Congenital Cardiovascular Care Unit provides clinical research opportunities to improve specialized treatment for children with cardiovascular disease.
The division collaborates with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner to investigate genetic causes of sudden cardiac death. One of the aims is to understand the role of genetic mutations in sudden death in patients with no clinical history of cardiac abnormalities.
Division members are investigating how rare genetic mutations in cardiac genes produce arrhythmias. Another area of investigation is the development of a system that allows obstetricians to image fetal hearts at 12 to 16 weeks gestation, allowing for early consultation with fetal cardiac specialists. Quality-of-life research is also being conducted to determine the effects of multiple procedures and hospitalizations on patients with heart disease.
Every quarter, the division’s global team of researchers screens pediatric patients in Trinidad for cardiac conditions.
