Clinical Sites

  • Fink Ambulatory Center, Room 135 (Allergy Touchdown Space) 150 E. 32nd St, New York, NY 10016 (majority of clinic is here)
  • Bellevue Ambulatory Center (only 1 clinic session is held here weekly)
  • Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and Bellevue Hospital Center (for inpatient consults prn)

Description

This is a 2-week elective focused on Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. It is primarily an outpatient elective, with some inpatient consultations. Students will become familiar with real life application of the hypersensitivity disorders, and learn to distinguish IgE mediated food allergy and non-IgE mediated food allergy. They will also encounter common diagnoses of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and learn evaluation and work up of these disorders and primary immunodeficiency. Students will have the opportunity to observe procedures of allergic skin prick testing, oral food challenge, biologic and immunotherapy administration.

Objectives of the Elective

  1. You will be prepared to recognize, evaluate, diagnose, and treat common allergic and immunologic disorders.
  2. You will become familiar with common diagnostic tests and procedures used in the field of Allergy and Immunology. 
  3. You will learn when it is appropriate to refer and seek further evaluation by an Allergy/Immunology specialist.

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

  1. You will see patients independently, give formal presentation, formulate a hypothesis and a treatment plan, with the help of a faculty supervisor
  2. Each patient seen by the student will be staffed with the faculty physician who will provide one-on- one education regarding diagnosis and treatment, as well as information about the pathophysiology of the specific disorder
  3. It is expected that prior medical records/outside allergy tests will be reviewed and summarized and a comprehensive allergy/immunology-focused medical interview and physical examination be conducted at a level appropriate for you

Method of Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on their clinical work through direct observation, presentation and review of clinical notes. Formal evaluation will be completed by the elective director based on holistic feedback from all faculty who had contact with the student via the COMET evaluation system and direct feedback.
