Description
This is a longitudinal teaching elective for medical students with a passion for and interest in teaching and medical education. During the academic year, senior students will provide peer teaching and feedback to junior learners in pediatrics in various settings/forms:
- orientation workshops
- teaching on rounds
- bedside sessions, including H&P and PE direct observation and feedback; clinical reasoning verbal and written feedback on oral presentation and written documentation
- pediatric pipeline involvement with first years
- curriculum development including shelf review
- OSCE teaching support at NYSIM
Objectives of the Elective
This elective is designed to develop students’ skills as clinician-educators. Students will be able to hone their own clinical skills and knowledge, while developing effective teaching skills, such as learning how to give directed feedback. Students will build their professional skills and professional identity, learning how to manage responsibility, provide mentorship, incorporate feedback, and maintain confidentiality. Students will work on self-direct goals, while closely collaborating with academic pediatric faculty.
Key Responsibilities of the Student While on Elective
As this is a longitudinal elective, students must complete the equivalent of 35 hours of elective time per week: 70 hours for a two-week elective and 140 hours for a four-week elective.
Over the course of the year, required activities include the following:
- participate in four of the eight pediatric clerkship orientation teaching workshops (each four-hour credit)
- provide clinical pearl teaching on rounds in four of the eight clerkship blocks (each two- to three-hour credit)
- one bedside teaching session in four of the eight clerkship blocks (each one-hour credit).
- Examples include H&P and physical exam direct observation and feedback, interesting physical exam sessions (ex: murmurs, rashes), clinical reasoning, and verbal and written feedback on oral presentation and written documentation
- teaching support during debrief session in four of the eight pediatrics clerkship OSCEs (each one-hour credit)
- hold an office-hour session in four of the eight clerkship blocks (each two-hour credit per session); help with questions from students regarding pediatric presentations/pediatric exams/shelf studying during the block
- participate in at least one of the elective activities noted below
Elective activities students can participate in include the following. (Hours of credit are determined with preceptors):
- narrative medicine sessions
- pediatric pipeline involvement with first years, including PE and newborn nursery teaching sessions, sessions with the pediatrics interest group Caring for Kids, and medical interviewing sessions (potentially focusing on adolescent component)
- curriculum participation and development:
- social media curriculum: shelf review question posts
- one- to two-hour shelf review session
- shelf review Jeopardy session
- participate in the Pediatric Clerkship Curriculum design
- participate in preceptor sessions
- creation of journal clubs
- advocacy opportunities/community service
- residency application mentoring/support
- advanced pediatrics SIM sessions if students have completed Advanced Pediatrics
- creation of scholarly projects based on their work in the elective
- join lectures and didactics session with clerkship students
- join PRIME meetings
- participation in Transition to Clerkship and/or ICS pediatric related activities, such as facilitating pediatric ICS SIM
- participation in FCS pediatric related activities outside of the course, such the bedside newborn exams
Student responsibilities also include timeliness and communication of absences.
Didactics and Supervision
Students participating in the elective will meet with preceptors once every month.
Students will receive formative feedback to help develop their teaching skills (such as lecture feedback and observed feedback sessions) and will also receive career mentoring. They will also work closely with the elective management team to manage schedules and commitments. Hours with preceptors and didactics will count towards total hours.
Students will also receive regular didactic sessions, including but not limited to the following:
- Orientation and Pediatrics Refresher
- how to give formative and constructive feedback
- how to develop an engaging lecture
- Bedside Teaching 101: The Art of Clinical Pearls
Method of Evaluation
Pass/Fail
Students will receive (two or four) weeks of elective credit if they complete all required hours and components of the elective, as noted above.
- 70 hours over the course of the elective would provide two weeks credit
- 140 hours over the course of the elective would provide four weeks credit
