Autism & Related Disorders Externship

The Autism and Related Disorders Emphasis Externship seeks externs to provide services at the Child Study Center on the Manhattan campus through our Autism Spectrum Disorder Service. We serve children, adolescents, and adults who have autism, as well as those who have a wide range of social communication difficulties. Because individuals with autism spectrum disorder often display psychiatric disorders at the same time, our externs also gain significant exposure to individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, learning disorders, and other conditions.

Although the clinical focus is on supporting autistic individuals, there may be opportunities for externs to treat and evaluate children who have other psychiatric presentations. Our service utilizes tailored evidence-based treatments using primarily cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and parent management training. The extern will also have opportunities to participate in PEERS® social skills groups and parent training cases, including gaining exposure to the RUBI program.

The position is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program with a terminal degree of PhD or PsyD. Applicants are required to have supervised clinical experience with children, preferably those with autism.

Additional details regarding this externship offering can be found within the Externship Site Directory for the Northeastern Regional Externship Match. Learn more on our site listing for the 2026–27 training year.
