Transdiagnostic Service Externship
The Transdiagnostic Service at Child Study Center was developed to address the needs of children and families who present with elevated rates of comorbidity, multiple problem areas, and no clear primary diagnoses—those who do not fit into traditional diagnostic frameworks. Utilizing a transdiagnostic approach, this program focuses on understanding and treating shared underlying mechanisms (e.g., irritability, avoidance behaviors, adverse experiences, and family accommodation) that cut across multiple psychological diagnoses, from internalizing to externalizing disorders. Our service utilizes evidence-based treatments, primarily cognitive behavioral interventions, to address these conditions.
Led by Clinical Director Lori K. Evans, PhD, the Transdiagnostic Service is a multidisciplinary team that includes psychologists, psychiatrists, trainees, and support staff. Externs report directly to Emily Hirsch, PhD, and Morgan Cohen, PhD, the faculty on the service, and participate in weekly team meetings. The transdiagnostic approach exemplifies integration across specialties. In this spirit, externs are supported in collaborating with other clinical services within the Child Study Center whenever possible and are encouraged to participate in program development, presentations, and research initiatives.
Externs receive training in cognitive behavioral therapy, including parent management training and exposure therapy, and also learn principles from dialectical behavior therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy. In addition, externs participate in the year-round Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry didactic training series. They may also attend weekly Child Study Center case conferences and the department’s grand rounds, which are led by renowned experts in mental health. Extensive summer Friday trainings are also offered through the department.
The position is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program with a terminal degree of PhD or PsyD. Applicants with interest and experience in treating complex cases and working with patients with a broad array of problems at varying levels of severity are encouraged to apply.
