Child Study Center—Long Island Clinical Psychology Externship

We are seeking a clinical extern for Child Study Center—Long Island. This satellite office of our outpatient faculty group practice serves children, adolescents, and their families. Our program specializes in the assessment and treatment of pediatric psychiatric concerns, including the full range of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, disruptive behavior disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, learning disorders, and other comorbidities.

Long Island campus faculty typically function as generalist practitioners, and the clinical extern is exposed to the broad spectrum of presentations, with a slight focus on anxiety and mood-based disorders. We focus on providing evidence-based care, most often from a cognitive behavior therapy perspective. Modalities often used by our clinical extern include exposure, exposure and response prevention, habit reversal training, behavioral activation, social skills training, and dialectical behavioral therapy. Note that externs are not provided opportunities for engaging in a full dialectical behavioral therapy program.

The clinical extern typically sees six to eight cases per week, in addition to participating in weekly supervision, weekly multidisciplinary case conferences, and biweekly didactics. The clinical extern is trained in comprehensive diagnostic assessment, with an emphasis on case conceptualization. The clinical extern is encouraged to integrate fully into our team, including regular interdisciplinary collaboration. Additional didactic opportunities are offered. The clinical extern can opt into additional training of a primarily observational nature with a clinical neuropsychologist; this opportunity is based on availability and is not guaranteed. The position is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program with a terminal degree of PhD or PsyD.

The primary externship supervisor is Kaitlin R. Happer, PhD. The extern will participate in supplemental supervision with additional faculty members.
