Child & Adolescent Psychology Externships Integrated Behavioral Health at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital

Integrated Behavioral Health at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital

Candidates may apply to a maximum of two Child Study externships, including those listed below. Participation in a psychology externship with the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone is contingent upon the execution of a clinical education affiliation agreement with our institution and your university. Learn more about clinical agreements on our website.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone offers four advanced externship positions in pediatric psychology within the Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) Team at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Our interdisciplinary team provides clinical services, conducts research, and develops programs that address the psychosocial aspects of illness and injury while promoting positive health behaviors in children and families with acute or chronic medical conditions.

The Pediatric Psychology Externship provides training across three core domains—clinical service delivery, research, and program development—through outpatient pediatric services with opportunities for inpatient consultation. Externs function as integral members of the psychosocial and medical teams, collaborating with physicians, nurses, social workers, and allied providers on patient care, program innovation, and interdisciplinary research.

Clinical Training and Responsibilities

Externs deliver evidence-based assessment and intervention for children, adolescents, and families coping with medical illness, functional symptoms, or psychological concerns related to their care. Training emphasizes brief, targeted psychotherapies, integrating cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy–informed skills, psychodynamic, interpersonal, mindfulness, and family-based approaches. Common focus areas include medical nonadherence, chronic pain, functional disability, depression, anxiety, parent stress, adjustment to diagnosis, and transition of care.

These are some of the externship’s additional responsibilities:

  • conducting psychosocial assessments and implementing treatment plans
  • providing consultation and education to medical teams and physicians in training
  • participating in program development and quality improvement projects
  • engaging in primary prevention, mental health screening, and integrated care initiatives
  • attending weekly didactics, including Child Study Center case conferences and grand rounds
  • receiving two hours of weekly individual supervision and one hour of group supervision

Research and Program Development

Externs may contribute to research and quality improvement projects related to integrated pediatric behavioral health. These are some of the current initiatives:

  • Bariatric Surgery and Weight Management Program
  • Eating Disorders Psychosocial Support Program
  • Food Allergy Anxiety in Pediatric Patients and Families
  • Hassenfeld Child and Family Wellbeing Bundle
  • Solid Organ Transplant Psychosocial Support Program
  • Universal Suicide Risk Screening Initiative

Externship Tracks

Externs may apply to no more than two of the following four IBH tracks.

Advanced Subspecialties Track (Outpatient Services)

Provides advanced training in outpatient pediatric psychology across diverse medical subspecialties at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Externs are embedded within select pediatric subspecialty clinics (e.g., gastroenterology, endocrinology, transplant, and pain) and collaborate closely with interdisciplinary medical teams to address the psychosocial aspects of illness and treatment. They serve as primary clinicians for 5 to 10 active cases per week, addressing concerns such as medical nonadherence, chronic pain, eating disorders, gender dysphoria, family functioning, and adjustment to diagnosis. Training emphasizes integrated behavioral health intervention, prevention programming, and participation in research and quality improvement initiatives. Didactics include Child Study Center case conferences, departmental grand rounds, and weekly IBH team meetings.
