Dialectal Behavior Therapy-Adolescent (DBT-A) Program Externship

Part of the Anxiety and Mood Disorders Service at the Child Study Center, the Adolescent Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT-A) Program is a comprehensive outpatient treatment program for adolescents (ages 12 to 18) who have suicidal thoughts and behaviors, tendencies toward nonsuicidal self-injury, interpersonal difficulties, and other maladaptive coping behaviors.

The DBT-A Program provides all four components of comprehensive dialectal behavior therapy (DBT):

  • individual therapy
  • phone coaching
  • multifamily skills group
  • consultation team

The extern receives training and supervision in the implementation of the evidence-based treatment model of DBT with adolescents, as well as the adaptations of DBT for youth presenting with substance use and post-traumatic stress disorder. Externs are expected to carry three DBT cases, attend a weekly DBT multifamily skills group, and carry two to three additional cases involving anxiety and mood disorders. Externs are also expected to be available to patients via phone coaching.

The position is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program with a terminal degree of PhD or PsyD. Externs report to Jeremy A. Wernick, LCSW, director of the Adolescent Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program.
