Internal Medicine Residency

Mission Statement

NYU Langone’s trifold mission to care, teach, and discover inspires our internal medicine residents and faculty throughout our integrated academic medical center. Our clinical training is based on serving the unique and varied patient populations of New York City across a variety of clinical settings. We optimize residents’ training by offering several different tracks that allow residents to personalize according to their interests. We are dedicated to developing physicians and physician-scientists who will be leaders in health systems transforming health care by providing compassionate, evidence-based care for patients of all needs and backgrounds.

Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to NYU Internal Medicine! I hope that you will find many of the things I value and love about our residency program on these pages. What is hardest to share here is our ethos, the camaraderie between interns, residents, and faculty as we care for patients in our hospitals and clinics, and the shared thrill of the scientific and humanistic work we do at all of our sites. The  variety of patients and service models across our training sites allow our residents to experience the breadth and depth of Internal Medicine. We know that this variety allows for curiosity to flourish, fostering deep learning in both medical knowledge and clinical skills, but even more importantly, the adaptive expertise that prepares our trainees for work in any medical setting. We are so proud of our environment that supports house staff in their learning journey. This includes our enthusiastic teaching faculty, protected academic time in the inpatient and outpatient settings, dedicated time for POCUS and simulation-based training, and community building through supported events such as team dinners and retreats.

Our residents take advantage of the vibrant research opportunities here at NYU and develop into prolific clinician scientists who produce significant scholarship. I am an NYU lifer (born at Tisch Hospital!, NYU GSOM '04, residency '07, chief residency '08, and in program leadership since) and I am proud to show off what makes our program special. Enjoy learning more about our amazing learning community.

Our Program

We offer residents unique training experiences at three types of hospital systems in New York City—private, municipal, and federal. At NYU Langone Medical Center in midtown Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospital/Bellevue and Gouverneur campuses, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, residents encounter a broad range of patients and diseases. This experience prepares them for a rewarding career in clinical and academic medicine. Take a virtual tour to explore our residency training sites in Manhattan.

The Department of Medicine has more than 1,200 faculty affiliated with our subspecialty divisions. We are currently training more than 223 internal medicine residents and boast a diverse research portfolio, supported by $75 million in annual funding.

Our dedication to excellence in teaching and patient care, high-quality research and residency programs, and outstanding Department of Medicine faculty combine to prepare our residents for any field they choose.

Graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency program have their choice of the most sought-after fellowships and internal medicine jobs. Approximately 70 percent of our graduates go on to participate in a fellowship program, with a match rate greater than 98 percent. The other 30 percent become general internists, both as hospitalists and in ambulatory practice in academic and community medical settings. Many graduates go on to become academic faculty, department chairs, and clinical leaders in hospitals throughout the United States.
